The Onalaska High School gymnastics team won just one event as a team, but its depth turned that into a McLellan Invitational championship on Saturday.
The Hilltoppers put together a winning effort on the balance beam and added top-six all-around finishes by sophomore Sam Lass and senior Emily Mitzelfeldt to win the Division 1 title in the invitational hosted by Holmen.
Onalaska’s team score of 130.425 was enough to hold off second-place Southwestern/ Cuba City (130.15) and third-place Holmen (129.625) in the eight-team division.
Lass had an all-around score of 34.0 highlighted by fourth-place finishes in the bars (8.425) and balance beam (8.8). She was fifth in the all-around.
Mitzelfeldt was sixth in the all-around (33.7) and placed fifth on the balance beam (8.75).
The Vikings were led by Emma Madsen, who was seventh in the all-around (33.275). She was fourth in the floor exercise (8.8).
Laurie Wanderski was fifth in the floor exercise (8.625), and Marissa Daniels fifth on the bars (8.4).
Viroqua Area senior Karla Hagen won three events and the all-around (37.0). She won the vault (9.175), bars (9.45) and floor exercise (9.35).
