At a regional competition last weekend in Eau Claire, the Onalaska High School dance team qualified its jazz and poms routines for this weekend’s state competition in La Crosse. The success at regionals comes on the heels of a triumph at the seventh annual Midwest Dance Fest the week before at Hartford Union High School in Hartford, Wis., where the team came out as grand champions, taking first place in jazz and hip-hop divisions and placing third in poms, only two points out of first.
A number of OHS dancers did well in the Hartford solo competition, too, including the following: Heather Bauer, first in ninth-grade division; Kylie Walz, second in 12th-grade division; Nicole Bauer, fourth in 10th-grade division; and Alayna Halverson, fifth in 10th-grade division.
What’s really impressive is the team is relatively young, made up of two seniors, six juniors, two sophomores and six freshman. “With it being such a young team, this is an incredible accomplishment,” said coach Jenna Schneider. “This team has really come together and has an incredible work ethic.”
“I have never been so proud of the team. I felt like regionals was the first time we all came together and really performed as a team,” said Kylie Walz, a senior captainon the team who choreographed the team’s jazz performance. “I am really excited to see how this weekend turns out, and I know we will be working harder than we have worked yet.”
