Why am I an Onalaska Lions Club member?
Because the Onalaska Lions Club is doing things in our community that I couldn’t do on my own, like holding bingo for residents at the Onalaska Care Center, like having a Halloween costume party for fifth-graders at three schools, like buying uniforms for a boys baseball team and a girls softball team, like providing a scholarships to Luther and Onalaska high school students, like sending a boy to Badger Boys State and a girl to Badger Girl State, like sending a student to a World Affairs Seminar, like transporting eyes to the Wisconsin Lions Eye Bank for cornea transplant or ringing the bell for the Salvation Army and a few others.
Lion Club members help when they’re available on our fundraisers like Lions Ice Fishing Derby, Sunfish Days, Riverfest and Lion Candy Days.
Beside the above projects, Lions donate to the Onalaska Holmen Emergency Food Basket, Thanksgiving Community Dinner, Wisconsin Lions Club Foundation to support Lions Club Camp at Rosholt for visually and hearing impaired kids, mild cognitively disabled kids and kids with diabetes.
By providing 1,418 campers in 2009 with a week of camp, Lions have given them the gift of love. They are worth the cost of summer camp. They are worth our tireless fundraising efforts to give them these five days free of charge.
I feel this is a better community because of what Lions contribute. I’ve been a Lion for more than 40 years, and I contribute my dues and time and I feel it has made me a better person.
