Holmen voters, for example, have a contest for village president — incumbent John Chapman vs. Trustee Nancy Proctor — and a four-way race for three seats on the Holmen Village Board, with newcomer Tony Horvath challenging incumbents Richard Anderson, Mark Seitz and Tony Szak.
In the town of Onalaska, the trio of candidates that swept three town board incumbents out of office two years ago all face challenges this spring.
Town Chairman Stan Hauser and former Town Chairman Dave Paudler face off in an electoral rematch. Supervisor Warren Booth is being challenged by Marc Schultz and Steve Michaels is running for Supervisor Joe Schaller’s seat. Neither Schultz nor Michaels have held office before.
In the town of Holland, two political newcomers — Jay Bratberg and Dave Bentzen — are running for the Supervisor 1 seat vacated by longtime board member James Halvorson, who decided not to seek re-election.
That’s the extent of the contested races in the Onalaska and Holmen area for municipal government and school board seats.
In a way, though, Dan Ferries, a write-in candidate for the Onalaska Common Council seat now held by Bob Muth, has a contested race, even though he’s the only one seeking the job.
Muth pulled out of the race late in the campaign for undisclosed personal reasons, so his name still will appear on the ballot. If Ferries gets fewer votes than Muth, then Mayor Mike Giese will have the opportunity to fill Muth’s seat by appointing someone.
There also are two contested statewide elections, one for Wisconsin Supreme Court — Chief Justice Shirley Abrahamson vs. Randy Koschnick — and one for state superintendent of public instruction — Tony Evers and Rose Fernandez.
