Alvin L. "Fonzie" Fonstad
HOLMEN — Alvin L. "Fonzie" Fonstad, 81, of Holmen, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center, La Crosse.
He was born April 25, 1928, in the town of Holland to Franklin and Olga (Lundgaard) Fonstad. Alvin was a WWII veteran, having served with the U.S. Army.
On Feb. 5, 1955, he married Helen "Jane" Mickelson at the Holmen parsonage, and she preceded him in death in February 2002.
Alvin was employed at the Holmen Creamery and Marigold Foods for several years, in addition to farming. After his retirement on April 2, 1993, he enjoyed his job at Drugan’s Castle Mound Country Club mowing grass.
Alvin was a member of the Morris-Snuggerud American Legion Post 284 of Holmen. He enjoyed flying airplanes, listening to polka music and especially using his mechanical abilities tinkering on tractors or anything that needed fixing.
Survivors include seven children, David (Barb) of Galesville, Linda (Michael) Kiedrowski of Menasha, Wis., Yvonne (Wayne) Padgett of Tokyo, Japan, Kathy Fonstad of Arcadia, Wis., Mary (Doug) Devine of Holmen, Cheryl Fonstad of West Salem, and Eric (Kim) of Holmen; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alice (Arnold) Johnson of Franklin, Wis. and Lois Johnson of Onalaska; two brothers, Richard (Janet) and Roy (Mary), both of Holmen; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Dennis; and a brother-in-law, LaVerne Johnson.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 30, at 11 a.m. at Lewis Valley Lutheran Church, W5402 Hwy. V, Holmen. Pastor Janet Wollam will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors by the Holmen American Legion Post 284 and the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard.
Friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.

ONALASKA — Timothy M. Welchert, 51, of Onalaska died Thursday, Dec. 24, 2009, in his home. Funeral arrangements will be announced by SchumachernKish Funeral Home of Onalaska.
John E. Ottens
ONALASKA — John E. Ottens, Jr., 54, of Ona-laska died Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center. He was born Aug. 20, 1955, in Sacramento, Calif., to John E. Sr. and Hazel L. (Hawker) Ottens. He married Cheryl McCluskey on June 22, 1996. John had a love for music, the Green Bay Packers, Elvis and classic cars. He was a renowned advocate for disability rights and a victim impact panel speaker. He spoke to the community about the consequences of drinking and driving. He had a great love for family, children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl; four daughters, Jennifer (Andrew) Paulick of Seymour, Wis., Angela (Aaron) Buck of Onalaska, Janelle (Robert) Ritter of Coon Valley, and Jamie (Terry) Mlsna of Cashton; eight grandchildren, Ryleigh, Reghan, Rhiannen, Autumn, Haleigh, Gracey, Zackry and Rory; two sisters, Julie (Lonnie) Runyan of La Crosse, and Jane (Phillip) Keene of West Chicago; and nieces and nephews, Jessica, Michael, John, Michelle, Taylor, Tristan and Tatum.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents and his parents.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at SchumachernKish Funeral Home, 200 West Ave. S., La Crosse. The Rev. David Olson will officiate. Burial will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of services Wednesday at the funeral home.
