Mathilda “Til” Bruett
HOLMEN — Mathilda “Til” Bruett, 93, of Holmen passed away Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at Bethany St. Joseph Care Center, La Crosse.
She was born May 19, 1916, at her grandmother’s home in Avon, Minn., to Peter and Walburga (Sumbs) Jansen of Sauk Rapids, Minn.
She grew up in Sauk Rapids, where her father owned a jewelry store. She graduated from Sacred Heart Catholic Grade School, Sauk Rapids High School, and Drews Business College in St. Cloud, Minn.
Mathilda began her employment as a secretary in the district office of Works Projects Administration in St. Cloud. She was later transferred to the state WPA office in St. Paul, Minn. With the advent of World War II, she was employed by the Newfoundland Base Contractors in St. Paul. When that office closed after completing their hiring, she was employed as bookkeeper for The DoAll Twin Cities Co. in Minneapolis.
On Oct. 8, 1942, Mathilda married Theodore E. Bruett of Drummond, Wis., at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in San Diego, and he preceded her in death in 1995. After the war the Bruetts lived in St. Paul, Worthington, Minn., and La Crosse and Onalaska before moving to Eau Claire, Wis., in 1964. Mathilda worked for the law firm of Losby and Losby in Eau Claire for 10 years and later was office manager at the Eau Claire County Guidance Clinic until her retirement in 1980. In September 2007 she moved to Holmen.
Mathilda is survived by her daughter, Susan (Peter) Holman of Holmen; grandson, Eric Holman; granddaughters, Lisa (Patrick) Urcia and Sara Holman and great-grandson, Reed Joseph Urcia, all of New Orleans, La.; a brother, Mathew (Jenny) Jansen of Thief River Falls, Minn., and Apache Junction, Ariz.; and a half-sister, Patricia (Rodney) Haldorson of Two Harbors, Minn. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by sisters, Mildred Benner of Sauk Rapids, Gertrude Schnaidt of Maple Grove, Minn., and Dorothy Farr of Milwaukee; and a half-sister, Louise Morgan of St. Paul.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 515 Main St., Holmen. The Rev. Robert Schaller will officiate and burial will take place at 11 a.m on Tuesday in Lakeview Cemetery, Eau Claire. Friends may call at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of services. Dickinson Family Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
