Forget expensive wrinkle creams and searching for the fountain of youth: A new study by British scientists suggests that you can slow the aging process simply by avoiding meat, fish and other foods that are high in methionine, a disease-causing amino acid. The researchers believe that a low-protein vegetarian diet may be the key to a long, healthy life.
That’s not surprising. Plant-based foods are cholesterol-free and high in fiber, vitamins, complex carbohydrates and cancer-fighting antioxidants. Other studies have shown that vegetarians and vegans live an average of six to 10 years longer than meat-eaters.
Vegan foods are kinder and more eco-friendly, too, so whether you’re looking to increase your life expectancy or you just want to eat more ethically, bypass the meat counter and head for the produce aisle. For vegan recipes and product suggestions, see www.VegCooking.com.
