The main topic of discussion recently on CNBC’s “Street Signs” was this: Is the deficit so high that we need to address it immediately? Meanwhile, we hear that Sen. Tom Colburn, R-Okla., is holding up Senate Bill 1963, an important bill for veterans benefits, because he wants to know how we will pay for it. Also, the Republicans are screaming about the high cost of health care.
My question is this: If everyone is so concerned about how much we are spending, why are they not concerned about our astronomical defense spending? I would like a discussion and a vote on that. We are in an unwinnable situation in Afghanistan. There must be a more economical way to protect our homeland than to have our armies spread all over the world.
We have huge problems in our country to solve. I say we take a time out and give our troops a rest. Use a large portion of defense spending to take care of health care and our veterans, and invest in a jobs program. Once normalcy returns to our economy, we can take a new look at how vast an empire we want to protect.
I give President Barack Obama and the Democrats credit for going up against the insurance lobby in its fight for health care. It really would be a bold move to go against the “military-industrial complex” to save our economy.
