The Onalaska High School football team couldn’t stop the big plays, and that’s what led to the demise of its three-game winning streak.
The Hilltoppers lost for the first time this season by giving up three scoring plays of more than 50 yards in a 21-13 defeat at the hands of Aquinas.
The Blugolds (2-2, 1-1) won the game with two fourth-quarter touchdown drives that ended with big plays by quarterback Jimmy Coady.
His 53-yard touchdown run gave Aquinas a 14-13 lead before his 59-yard scoring run provided the final margin.
Coady, who rushed for 135 yards on just 14 carries, also batted down an Onalaska pass at the end of the game and threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Ben Gierszewski in the first quarter.
The Hilltoppers did a good job defensively against Aquinas running back Andy Kirchner by holding him to 21 yards on 12 carries, but Coady was another story.
Onalaska (3-1, 1-1) had 306 yards of total offense, but it lost two fumbles and was intercepted once.
Wide receiver Tyler Adams, who was the area’s leading receiver with 287 yards after three games, was held to one catch for 13 yards.
Quarterback Drew Markworth rushed for 118 yards and a touchdown and passed for 60 yards.
