LETTER: Keep big flag flying on Mason Street

.
I am writing to the city of Onalaska and the individuals in charge of the large U.S. flag that usually flies on Mason Street.

I work at the Eagle Crest senior community across the street from the flag. For the last month or so the flag has been down. I really didn’t think much about it but I did notice that the large, magnificent flowing flag was not waving in the breezes. After all, there are many smaller flags in the area that are up and still visible.
Last Saturday, a resident changed how I felt. He came up and exclaimed how the large flag was not up and hadn’t been up for a month. I asked him why he liked that flag and he exclaimed with conviction, “I LOVE that flag.”

He had fought in at least two conflicts — World War II and Korea — and had seen numerous battles and casualties. This gentleman had made personal sacrifices like a lot of the veterans who live in the Eagle Crest community, and many of the wives, widows and loved ones of these veterans also made personal sacrifices.

I know that I owe a great deal to these individuals who fought for our freedom. On this week of celebrating our nation’s independence, I plan to raise a flag to these men and women who served our country.

And to the city of Onalaska, I ask of you, raise up your flag to honor these vets as well.
