News in brief

.
Here are a selection of brief news items from this week’s paper edition, and possibly a few news briefs that didn’t make it in the paper.

OHS dance team plans youth camp

PET OF THE WEEK: Brewer is a fine example of how wonderful the American pit bull terrier breed can be. He is about 6 months old and has been neutered and is current with his vaccinations. Brewer is an incredibly smart dog. He is inquisitive and ready to enjoy life’s adventures. He enjoys spending time with people, with some of his favorite pastimes including romping around in the yard, rollerblading, taking walks and just snuggling up next to you. He spent a short amount of time in a staff member’s home. She shared that Brewer was at first unsure of cats, but with time, he learned to accept them and interact very well with them. He absolutely loves to play with other dogs. Brewer should be a great match with children above toddler age, simply due to his tendency to bounce around a room. Brewer keeps his kennel very clean here and while being fostered had no accidents in the house. If you are looking for a companion that is social in nature and respectful of others, Brewer might be the dog for you. For more information on any of the animals at the Coulee Region Humane Society, call 781-4014 or stop by 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday or 1 to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

Bookworms aim to boost literacy

Wisconsin Bookworms marks five years in La Crosse County, introducing children to the joy of reading. Helping children discover good books and the benefits of reading is the goal of this program.

Wisconsin Bookworms is a partnership between the Wisconsin Association for Home and Community Education, University of Wisconsin-Extension Family Living Programs and Wisconsin Public Television. The program provides eight free books per year to children who otherwise might not be able to own them.

Local businesses and foundations have provided funding for this cause.

Volunteer readers attend Head Start classrooms, reading books and providing classroom activities for the students. Each book comes with an activity sheet filled with suggestions for activities related to the story that families can do together.

Through this early literacy program 7,664 books were distributed to Head Start children in the past five years. This school year 291 children and 20 volunteer readers participated in the program. The volunteers are either members of the La Crosse Association for Home & Community Education or the Retired Teachers Association.

Parents whose children participate in Wisconsin Bookworms report that they talk more frequently with their children about books, spend time reading together and visit the public library.
