Maddie Johnson, 15, of Onalaska, won the 18-and-under girls tennis singles title at the United States Tennis Association Culver’s Waukesha Junior Open in Waukesha, Wis., on Sunday.
Johnson won four matches in straight sets to claim the title, defeating University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee recruit Brittany Skemp of Brookfield 6-2, 6-2 in the final.
Johnson will be a sophomore at Onalaska High School in the fall.
Puls honored for work in classroom
DALLAS — Former Onalaska High School football standout Dan Puls has been recognized for his efforts in the classroom at UW-Eau Claire.
Puls, a starting offensive lineman, is one of five Blugolds named to the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame’s 2009 Hampshire Honor Society.
The honor society is comprised of players from all divisions of play who each maintained at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA.
Holmen’s Special Olympians shine at state track in Stevens Point
Holmen Special Olympics made a strong showing June 6 at the state track meet in Stevens Point, Wis. Joe Neumann placed fifth in the shot put and 400-meter. run. Dennis Wurzel placed sixth in the 100-meter run, fifth in the shot put and earned a bronze medal in the 200. Mike Jacobson was fourth in the shot put and earned a gold medal in the 200. Brady Dockendorff was fourth in the 100, earned a bronze medal in the 400 and a gold medal in shot put. The 400-meter relay team (Wurzel, Neumann, Dockendorff and Jacobson) earned a gold medal as well.
Tabbert finishes second in women’s state match play
Katie Tabbert came close to claiming her first major golf victory last week.
The 2008 Onalaska High School graduate, who won last year’s La Crosse Tribune/Midwest Professional Appraisal, Inc. Women’s County Amateur, lost to Kelsey Verbeten, 4 and 2, in finals of the Wisconsin Women’s State Golf Association Match Play Championships in Eau Claire, Wis.
Tabbert, a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, qualified for Championship Flight match play with an 80. She then won three straight matches before losing to Verbeten, a senior on the University of Wisconsin golf team.
Jill Preeshl, a junior at Upper Iowa University and former star golfer for Holmen High School, also qualified for Championship Flight. However, Preeshl lost her first-round match.
