Duane Vike liked a number of things he saw from his Holmen High School baseball team this spring. Going from a two-win season in 2008 to a 12-16 record this spring, it’s easy to see why.
Vike, who also coaches the Holmen American Legion baseball team, has many of the same players on the Legion team. Their improvement continues, Vike said.
“We don’t have a deep and talented pitching staff,” Vike said, “but it’s a good group of kids. One of the biggest strengths is our speed. Our outfielders are able to run a lot of balls down, and we’re pretty good on the bases.”
All of the above led to a 5-4 win over the La Crosse Juniors on Wednesday night, extending Holmen’s winning streak to four games and pushing its overall record to 8-3.
Ross Kerska picked up the win against the Juniors with relief help from Mat Price. Ben Cejka drove in a pair of runs for Holmen, while Taylor Hauser went 2-for-3. Trey Candahl belted a double for Holmen.
Holmen travels to Viroqua this weekend for the Viroqua tournament.
