ONALASKA — What is the average depth of Lake Onalaska?
What is the volume of sand carried by the water down the Black River each year?
What ancient fish species are found in the Black River?
To find out the answers and more, you may wish to participate in the fifth annual Friends of Brice Prairie Sunrise Paddle on Saturday.
Marc Schultz, one of the event organizers, said recent rains have ensured good flow on the Black River when the flotilla leaves Lytle’s Landing on the northern tip of Brice Prairie at 6:30 a.m.
“We usually have 40 to 50 canoes, kayaks or other small boats,” said Schultz, while describing the guided sunrise paddle.
“We have all ages of participants, from grade schoolers to old schoolers,” he said. “This year we are having a 10 question voluntary quiz about the Black River and Lake Onalaska. We also are going to discuss the impact of invasive plants and fish on native fish and wildlife.”
The flotilla is expected to travel downstream on the Black River through the backwaters of Lake Onalaska and the Upper Mississippi National Fish and Wildlife River Refuge to the Upper Brice Prairie boat landing. The trip takes about 2½ hours, according to Schultz.
Return transportation to Lytle’s is provided. Schultz said a $5 donation is requested.
“Bring your canoe or kayak, paddles, a legal personal flotation device, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, water and appropriate clothing,” Schultz said. “Canoes are available upon request.”
