MINNEAPOLIS — There were more than 350 people in the right field area of the Metrodome and you could have heard a pin drop.
There was dead silence at the Kwik Trip Harmon Killebrew Home Run Celebration Dinner as all eyes watched the video screen.
We watched a boy get out of his wheelchair and crawl from third base all the way to home plate. It took 45 seconds for the boy to accomplish his dream and touch home plate.
The short video left a lump the size of a baseball in my throat. Looking around, I couldn’t find a dry eye in the place.
It was an experience I will always remember.
The elaborate banquet held a couple weeks ago was staged in right field. There were several former Major League baseball stars, including Killebrew, Paul Molitor, Damian Miller and Tony Oliva, among others. Former Green Bay Packers’ great Jerry Kramer and many other celebrities also were there to help support Killebrew’s cause.
There were silent and live auctions, great food and speeches by Killebrew, Kwik Trip representative Dan Kunz and others. Yet the climax was the inspirational video about the Miracle League and its purpose.
If you don’t know what the Miracle League is all about, log on to www.miracleleague.com to learn all about the organization and its purpose. You also will learn more about Miracle League baseball fields.
The La Crosse area will be fortunate enough to have one of the first fields in Wisconsin when a complex is built next to the Family YMCA-North Branch in Onalaska later this summer. The only thing that stands between dream and reality is $50,000 for the $420,000 project.
Once the final dollar is raised, the project begins. Six weeks later, physically challenged boys and girls, ranging from age 5 to 18, will experience their Major League dream on a Miracle League field.
I look forward to watching and lending a helping hand at that first of many Miracle League games in Onalaska. Hopefully, you will join me in cheering on the players. It’s one game I won’t miss.
