One of the Holmen boys tennis team’s goals before the season began in 2009 was to place third in the MVC Conference, a goal which had never been reached by any Holmen tennis team before.
While during the dual meet portion of the schedule, Holmen did indeed finish 3rd with a 4-2 record, it was caught by La Crosse Central at the MVC tournament in point totals, 38 to 37.
In high school tennis, points are earned for each match won during the dual meet season; those points are then added to the points won in each match at the season-ending conference tournament to get the final point totals and the final team standings. Holmen ultimately placed fourth, one point behind Central.
Overall, 2009 was an excellent year for the boys team. As a team, they finished with an overall point total in the MVC of 37, surpassing a previous high of 28 in 2007. A MVC dual meet record of 4-2 was also a first. The team finished with an overall varsity record of 11-7, while the varsity reserve finished with an outstanding mark of 8-1.
Individually, the No. 3 doubles team of senior Trent Bodin and freshman Sam Smith finished second in the MVC, third in the Baraboo sectional and ended with a 13-4 record. No.1 singles player Matt Jameson finished 3rd in conference and advanced to the Baraboo sectional where he fell one victory shy of a berth in the state tournament in Madison.
Freshman Jesse Kreger advanced to the MVC Conference finals at No. 3 singles where he finished in second place. Also placing for Holmen in conference were seniors Cole Wittwer and Ethan Pedretti in fourth place at No.2 doubles. Na Xiong finished in 4th place at No. 2 singles.
Coach Greg Jameson was named MVC Coach of the Year for 2009.
The 2009 team graduates 11 seniors, but the 2010 team looks to build off talented juniors Ka Chang, Sai Vang and Xai Xiong along with strong freshman performers Sam Smith, Jesse Kreger and Sonny Xiong.
