Pearse chooses Viterbo University

.
Holmen High School’s Billy Pearse, the golfer of the year in the Mississippi Valley Conference, is heading to Viterbo University in La Crosse.

Pearse, 18, has verbally agreed to attend Viterbo next fall, according to V-Hawks men’s golf coach Jim Socha, who said Pearse signed his official letter of intent at a press conference Friday, May 29.
“It’s good for Billy and good for Viterbo,” said Socha, who has been on the fast track recruiting the talented Pearse the past couple of months.

“We’re expecting him to be a big contributor to the university and to the golf program.”

Pearse narrowed his choices between Viterbo and Winona State University, but in the end, chose to become a V-Hawk.

“They’re both great schools and I couldn’t go wrong with either one,” said Pearse, who plans to major in business management and then go onto law school.

Socha said Pearse is not only receiving a four-year athletic scholarship, but also an academic scholarship based upon his cumulative high school grade-point average and ACT score.

“Billy is a high quality young man. I like what I see from him on the golf course, but I also like what I see from him off the golf course,” Socha said.

Paul Laxton, Holmen boys golf coach, said Pearse is reaping the rewards from all of his hard work.

“It’s a great opportunity for him to stay and play locally and be near his family,” Laxton said.

“It’s nice for Billy to get recruited because of all his hard work. It’s also nice for Viterbo to hold onto local players and enhance their program. And, it’s nice for our high school to have kid come though our program, get recruited and go to a school like Viterbo.”
