Senator Dan Kapanke co-sponsored a bill to require insurance companies to cover hearing aids and cochlear implants for children up to age 18. This bill allows children to thrive by developing proper speech and language, while saving the taxpayers significant dollars through special education and other lifelong savings. The bill was signed by Gov. Jim Doyle on Thursday, with deaf and hard-of-hearing children surrounding him.
While we do not live in the area, my husband is a UW-La Crosse graduate and we return to the area often to attend UW-L sporting events. Throughout the past year we have had conversations with Sen. Kapanke regarding the bill and in every conversation he was extremely personable, professional, caring and genuine. My father-in-law met Senator Kapanke at a feed co-op open house in Hillsboro and was also extremely impressed with him.
While the bill received bi-partisan support this session, Sen. Kapanke supported the bill from the beginning. Deaf and hard-of-hearing children are not Republican or Democrat, they are innocent children, and Sen. Kapanke realized this bill was a win-win situation for both families and taxpayers alike.
You are lucky to have such a supportive and caring senator.
