MENASHA, Wis. (AP) -- State wildlife officials are hoping the public can help them figure out what’s killing dozens of large turtles around the Fox Cities.
The state Department of Natural Resources is asking residents to report any recently dead or dying snappers and painted turtles. The DNR hopes that will lead to quicker examinations and fresher clues.
Within the past few weeks, officials in the Menasha area reported the deaths of six snapping turtles and four or five painted turtles. Another two dozen large turtles were discovered dead at a nearby pond since early May.
Julie Langenberg is a veterinarian at the DNR’s Wildlife Heath Laboratory. She says there’s no immediate indication of an epidemic infection, but her lab needs more specimens to test.
