As a pharmacist, I am eager to join with President Barack Obama and Congress in their efforts to bring accessible, quality and affordable health care to every American.
Pharmacies are the face of neighborhood health care, providing valuable services and trusted care. They offer counseling to patients on the importance of taking their prescriptions properly and offer preventive services like vaccinations.
During the health care reform debate, I urge U.S. Rep. Ron Kind to ensure that any legislation strengthens the pharmacist-patient relationship through expanding counseling programs, such as medication therapy management. These efforts lower health care costs and reduce the need for emergency room visits.
I also support a fair prescription reimbursement structure. Federal regulators are planning to cut billions for a wide range of Medicaid prescriptions.
These cuts threaten patient access to pharmacy services, especially in rural and inner-city areas.
