Sand Lake third-graders try their hand at news reporting

.
In an effort to get our readers up to speed on happenings at Sand Lake Elementary, four third-grade English as a Second Language students of Sara Yassini have written short articles on recent happenings at the school.

The fun olympics by LISA LOR
Every single year, Sand Lake students have Olympics Day. On Olympics Day we play different kinds of games, like Sneak Tag, Tug of War and Broken Egg.

One of the students’ favorite games is Water Squeeze. That is a game where we soak a sponge in a water bucket and then we throw the sponge at our partner.

All of the games will be outdoors except for face painting. The Olympics Day is so important because we learn sportsmanship and have fun.

I interviewed Mrs. Abraham and she said we have Olympics every year to show how we improve our skills and learn new games.

The Sand Lake garden by FUECHI XIONG

At Sand Lake Elementary School, we will be planting a new garden. The Earth Day Committee received a grant of $200 for a garden and for purchasing items for our greenhouses. The Earth Day Committee will start the garden, but later they want students to help take care of it.

We will be planting plants that butterflies and birds like to go by. The new garden will be planted before school ends and will be in the back of the school.

It will be a wonderful place for students to learn about plants and insects.

Why recycling? by KAYLA YANG

At Sand Lake Elementary School we started a recycling program. We are recycling paper, plastic and cans. Everyone in the whole school participates. Every room has a green paper recycling bin from Waste Management.

I interviewed Mrs. Ericksmoen and she said kindergarten and first grade bins get picked up by Student Council. Second- through fifth-grade classrooms are responsible for their own bins. The janitor takes all of the recycling to the Dumpster.

Recycling helps take care of the earth and helps people become responsible.

Middle school orchestra by MEENAN YANG

On May 21, the Holmen Middle School orchestra came to Sand Lake Elementary. The group of students was from sixth, seventh and eighth grade.

The students played many types of instruments such as the viola, violin, cello, bass and electric violin. The middle school students played some songs from their books and each group played jazz.

I interviewed Mrs.Norris and she said that she invited them because the middle school students wanted to share music with us. Mrs. Norris conducted one song and she was so happy that she got to conduct! The Sand Lake students loved it and were cheering a lot.

" Wonderful job Lisa, Kayla, Fuechi, and Meenan. You should be very proud of yourselves! "
