Gertrude J. Peterson
MINDORO — Gertrude J. Peterson, 87, of Mindoro died Wednesday, May 20, 2009, at Mulder Health Care Facility in West Salem.
She was born Oct. 13, 1921, in Melrose to Clifford and Bertha (White) Nimmo. Gertrude worked in Chicago as a waitress at the Marshall-Fields Diner, she returned to Melrose and married Gordon Peterson on Feb. 14, 1952, in Melrose. Gertrude and her husband farmed for many years in Mindoro. She also worked with her husband in their sorghum mill, providing sorghum to many area stores. Gert was a member of the Mindoro Lutheran Church, the Mindoro Lioness Club and the Black Oak Friendship Club. Gert loved her family and her cats and dogs.
Gertrude is survived by her grandson, Brian (Sally) Jones of Mindoro; a great-granddaughter, Miranda; one sister, Eva Severson of Melrose; one sister-in-law, Violet Peterson of Onalaska; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon; a daughter, Jean Ann; one brother, Verl Nimmo and his wife Lenora; three sisters and their husbands, Agnes (Ernest) Schnulle, Clara (Leo) Gilboy and Veda (Arthur) Rand; two brother-in-laws, Vilas Severson and La Vern (and his first wife Florence) Peterson.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, at Mindoro Lutheran Church. The Rev. Janet Wollam will officiate. Burial will follow in the Farmington Cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 9 a.m. until time of services.
Memorials are preferred and may be designated to Mindoro Lutheran Church or Mindoro First Responders.

Glen L. Sacia
MINDORO — Glen L. Sacia, 91, formerly of Mindoro died Saturday, May 23, 2009, at Marinuka Manor in Galesville.
He was born May 9, 1918, in Mindoro to Harry and Winnie (Wilson) Sacia. Glen was a veteran of the U.A. Army, serving in the Aleutian Islands during World War II. On Sept. 10, 1946, he married Louise Olson in West Salem, and she preceded him in death on Aug. 24, 2000. Together, they farmed in the Mindoro area for many years. In addition to farming, Glen worked for the La Crosse County Highway Department for many years. Following his retirement, he continued to work until age 85, part-time in maintenance for Riverland Girl Scout Camp Ehawee. Glen was a 63 year member of Gunderson-Gilbertson American Legion Post 507 of Mindoro and a member of the Black Oak Rider’s Club.
Survivors include one son, Richard (Sherry) Sacia of Galesville; two daughters, Kay (Michael) Grimslid of Holmen and Lori (Robert) Ernstes of Melrose; one foster son, Russell Smalley and his family of O’Fallon, Ill.; six grandchildren, Natalee (Jeremy) Stock of North Padre Island, Texas, Nicklaus Grimslid of Camp Pendleton, Calif., John Sacia of Sidney, Australia, Ann Sacia of Minneapolis, Stephanie Spurlin of Nashville, Tenn., and Emma Ernstes of Melrose; one great-granddaughter, Louise Sacia Stock; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Glen was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Spencer Sacia; and two sisters, Harriet Bahr and Janet Borchert.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, May 29, at Mindoro Lutheran Church. Pastor Janet Wollam will officiate. Following the service, military honors will be performed by Mindoro American Legion Post 507 and the U.S. Army Funeral Honor Guard. Private family burial will be in Black Oak Cemetery at a later date. Friends may call at Mindoro Lutheran Church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Mindoro Lutheran Church.

Debra Jean Kish
ONALASKA — Debra Jean Kish, 53, of Onalaska passed away Wednesday May 20, 2009, at Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, surrounded by her friends and family.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Onalaska United Methodist Church (212 Fourth Ave. N.) with Pastor Jenny Arneson officiating.
Deb was born July 10, 1955, in La Crosse to Charles Kish Sr. and Beverly (Roach) Kish. Having survived for so long fighting a chronic illness, Deb will be remembered as being strong-spirited and determined and always spreading her positive outlook on life with everyone. In remembering Deb, her favorite pastime would surely include camping and sharing good times with her family, especially her nephews and grandchildren, most often at Bluebird Springs in Medary, Wis.
She is survived by her parents; a daughter, Sondra Kish of Rochester, Minn.; brothers, Charles Kish Jr. (Gretchen) of Mesa, Ariz., and Keith Kish of La Crosse; grandchildren, Haley Reisner and Kole Reisner, both from Onalaska; nephews, Allen Kish of La Crosse and Cody Kish of Black River Falls; and special friends, Richard Sibley (Carmen) of Coon Valley, Paula Boardman (Dan) of Onalaska, and many other friends.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the National Kidney Foundation.

Carol A. Bendel
ONALASKA — Carol A. Bendel, 61, of Onalaska passed away Thursday, May 21, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer, at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center in La Crosse.
She was born May 22, 1947, in La Crosse to John and Betty (Trehus) Pfaff. Carol was employed by Lakeview Health Care Center in West Salem as an accountant. She loved her job and the people she worked with. She married Rick Bendel on June 24, 1967, in La Crosse. Her favorite activities were caring for her plants and her yard, knitting, crocheting, fishing, the Green Bay Packers and putting together holidays for her family, and in the past she enjoyed bowling. Most of all she loved attending her grandchildren’s activities and caring for them whenever possible. Carol was an unforgettable and kind soul. She will be extremely missed by her family and many friends.
She is survived by her children, Brent (Tammie) Bendel of Holmen, Blake Bendel of Onalaska, Stacy Zobeck and her fiance Rick Kaminski of Holmen, and Shelly (Jamie) Roe of La Crescent, Minn.; six grandchildren, Cameron and Keaton Bendel, Ariel and Brody Zobeck and Caiden and Kailix Roe; her father, John Pfaff of La Crosse; a sister, Mary (Larry) Webb of La Crescent; two brothers, Randy (Gina) Pfaff of Canyon Country, Calif., and Mark Pfaff of Holmen, numerous nieces and nephews; and her dog, Trey.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rick; her mother, Betty Pfaff; a brother, Larry Pfaff; and a son-in-law, Scott Zobeck.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 27, at Mary, Mother of the Church Parish at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in La Crosse. The Rev. Douglas Robertson will officiate. She will be laid to rest in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park Cemetery, next to the love of her life, Rick, where they will continue their never-ending journey, together once again. Friends may call at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse on Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until time of services.
The family would like to thank everyone at Franciscan Skemp Medical Center, the doctors and nurses, for their wonderful care, Dr. Mark Litzsow and staff at Rochester Methodist Hospital and to all her friends and co-workers who helped Carol in her time of need.
