Dale H. Stein
HOLMEN — Dale H. Stein, 64, of Holmen passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center.
He was born in La Crosse on Jan. 25, 1945, to Orville and Eleanor (Thompson) Stein. Dale served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Quirnheim, Germany, from 1965 to 1967. On Aug. 25, 1967, he married Christine Psaar in Ebertsheim, Germany.
Dale worked for the city of La Crosse for 31 years, retiring in December of 2008. He was a member of American Legion, Roy L. Vingers Post 52 in La Crosse.
Dale loved La Crosse and took pride in his work for the city. He enjoyed the outdoors, deer hunting, traveling, and liked to fix anything he could get his hands on, especially antique engines. But, most of all Dale loved his family, spending time with his grandchildren and family and friends in Germany.
Dale was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.
Dale is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Christine; one daughter, Jessica (Mario Garcia) Stein of Espanola, N.M.; two grandchildren, Max and Desmond Garcia; two brothers, Orville A. (Mary) Stein of La Crosse and Russell L. (Tena) Stein of Abilene, Texas; two sisters, Sandra L. (Jack) Grimes of Holmen and Viola “Jeannie” Wallace of Genoa; a sister-in-law, Carole Stein; his family and friends in Germany; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Douglas E. Stein and John F. Stein; and a sister-in-law, Karen Stein.
A memorial service with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 22, at Holmen Lutheran Church, 228 Morris St. The Rev. Dan Henderson will officiate. Friends may call Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 515 McHugh Road, Holmen on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m., and at the church on Friday from 10 a.m. until time of service. In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred.
Darrell D. ‘Fats’ Hanson
Darrell D. “Fats” Hanson, 75, of La Crosse died Saturday, May 16, 2009, at his home.
He was born July 3, 1933, in Stoddard to Helmer and Mabel (Galstad) Hanson. He had worked for many years at Hut Drive Inn in La Crosse and in 1971 began work at Track Shack Restaurant for several more years. Fats then spent a few years with Mid Town Coney Island before puchasing the Lunch Encounter in 1985, which he owned and operated until his retirement in 2003.
He married Mary Christianson, and they were together for over 20 years until divorcing. He later married Nancy Knutson in Las Vegas. Fats loved playing bingo, gambling, scratch-off tickets and all games of chance.
In addition to his wife, Nancy, he is survived by his children, Dan (Mona) Hanson of Onalaska, Chris (Dale) Schermerhorn of Onalaska, Doug (Julie) Hanson of Rush City, Minn., and Glen (Georgia) Hanson of Madison; three stepdaughters, Terri, Wendy and Darla; 11 grandchildren, Wendy (Chip) Cantwell, Robyn Hanson, Kala and Katie Kish, Keith (Angie) Hanson, Tony (Joan) Schermerhorn, Amanda (Chad) Matheny, Heather (Rick) Youngman, Lisa Higgins, and Jon and Eric Luhman; numerous great-grandchildren; two sisters, Darlene Guanella of Eau Claire, Wis., and Carol (Russell) Anderson of Whitehall; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Glenn Hanson; and a brother-in-law, John Guanella.
Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, May 21, at Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse, with the Rev. Richard Pamperin officiating. Burial will take place in Lower Coon Valley Lutheran Cemetery. Friends and family may call at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of services Thursday.
Sharon L. Johnson
MAQUOKETA, Iowa — Sharon Lorraine (Douglas) Johnson, 68, of Maquoketa died Saturday, May 16, 2009, in her home as a result of a courageous battle with cancer.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 21, at First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa. Visitation will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 20, at Carson & Son Funeral and Cremation Services in Maquoketa. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Maquoketa.
Sharon Lorraine Douglas was born April 23, 1941, in La Crosse to James and Lorraine (Riemer) Douglas. She attended school in La Crosse until 1957, when her family moved to Onalaska. She graduated from Holmen High School in 1959. She married David V. Johnson on Aug. 20, 1960, in La Crosse.
Sharon is survived by her husband of 48 years, David; a son; a daughter; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sandra of La Crosse; her mother and father, Lorraine and James of Milwaukee; and her brother, Bruce of Omaha, Neb.

LeRoy W. Kemp
LeRoy W. Kemp, 84, of La Crosse died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at St. Joseph Rehab Center, La Crosse.
He was born in La Crosse on Dec. 20, 1924, to John and Agnes (Kane) Kemp. He married Mary Jeffers on May 14, 1946, at St. Joseph the Workman Cathedral, La Crosse.
LeRoy graduated from Central High School and then attended WWTC for one year. He then joined the U.S. Army, serving our country in World War II and earning nine medals, including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. LeRoy captured a Nazi colonel and 13 of his men by himself in the Italian War area in 1944. LeRoy loved fishing and watching the Green Bay Packers.
He is survived by his wife, Mary of La Crosse; a daughter, Laurie Kemp of Onalaska; three sons, David (Hilde) Kemp of Aurora, Ill., Thomas Kemp of La Crosse, and Jeffery Kemp of La Crosse; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. He is further survived by many nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lucille; and three brothers, Leo, Robert and Harold.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 20, at St. James the Less Catholic Church, 1032 Caledonia St., La Crosse. The Rev. Roger Scheckel will officiate. Entombment, with military rites by Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52 of La Crosse, will be held in St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum in Catholic Cemetery, La Crosse. Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Blaschke & Schneider Funeral Home-Nelson Chapel, 1007 Caledonia St., La Crosse, with a rosary at 6:30 p.m. Family and friends may also call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of Mass on Wednesday.
Memorials are preferred to St. James the Less Catholic Church or St. Joseph Rehab Center.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff at St. Joseph Rehab Center for the wonderful care LeRoy received, and the Rev. Roger Scheckel for his inspiration and spiritual guidance in LeRoy’s final days.
Betty Ann Schmidt
WEST SALEM — Betty Ann Schmidt, 70, of West Salem died Sunday, May 17, 2009, at Hillview Health Care Center, La Crosse.
She was born in La Farge on April 1, 1939. Betty married Peter N. Schmidt on June 6, 1959, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. She had farmed for many years and had worked at Villa St. Joseph. Betty was a member of 4-H and loved fishing.
She is survived by five children, Rose Lemke of West Salem, Mary (Allan) Bergmann of St. Joseph Ridge, Kevin (Nancy) Schmidt of West Salem, Kenneth (Kimberly) Schmidt of West Salem and Thomas (Heidi) Schmidt of Onalaska; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; her mother, Alice; a sister, Helen Safford of St. Germaine, Wis.; and two brothers, Kenneth Widner of Beloit, Wis., and La Verne Widner of Crowley, La.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her father; her stepfather, Albert Widner; a grandson; and a granddaughter.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 23, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, St. Joseph Ridge. The Rev. Francis Abuah Quansah will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call at the church from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of services. A rosary will be recited Friday at 6 p.m. Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home of La Crosse is in charge of arrangements.
