ONALASKA — Thomas M. VanderKelen, 62, of Onalaska died Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Onalaska. Family and friends may call from noon until the time of services Friday at the church. Memorials may be given to the charity of the donor’s choice. Dickinson Family Funeral Home, Onalaska, is assisting the family.
Janice Carlson
HOLMEN — Janice A. Carlson, 90, was called to the Lord’s house on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, 2009, at Onalaska Care Center in Onalaska.
She was born March 12, 1919, in Holmen to Joseph and Anna (Anderson) Stenberg. She married Alton Carlson on Dec. 13, 1941, and he preceded her in death in 2000. Prior to her retirement, Janice worked at Electric Auto-Lite and Outers Lab.
She is survived by two sons, James (Sandy) Carlson of Onalaska and John (Deb) Carlson of Yellow Springs, Ohio; five grandchildren, Jeffrey, Tamara, Krista, Peter and Sam; six great-grandchildren, Reid and Sydney Carlson and Cassandra, Hannah, David and Michael Angier; many nieces and nephews; and special friends, Ray Nelson and Geri Klopfleisch.
In addition to her husband, Janice was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Orris; and two nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 13, at Holmen Lutheran Church, 228 Morris St., Holmen. The Rev. Dan Henderson will officiate, and burial will be in Greenmound Cemetery, rural Holmen. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 515 McHugh Road, Holmen, and at the church on Wednesday from 10 a.m. until the service.
Memorials may be given to Holmen Lutheran Church.

Henry ‘Hank’ F. Meyers
HOLMEN — Henry “Hank” F. Meyers, 86, of Holmen died in Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center on Saturday, May 9, 2009.
He was born Dec. 25, 1922, in Titonka, Iowa, to Henry and Florence (Gerdis) Meyers. He served with the U.S. Army infantry during World War II. Hank was a lifetime member of the VFW. He was a member of AA, maintaining sobriety since Aug. 26, 1963. Hank married Mildred A. “Arlene” (McGraw) on Aug. 28, 1970. Most of his working life was with the Rock Island Railroad.
He retired from the construction industry as the owner of Homes by Hank. Hank loved to read and enjoyed railroad paraphernalia.
Hank is survived by his beloved wife, Arlene; brothers and sisters, Gertrude Pruisman, Geraldine “Jerry” Steinblock, Ida Mae “Ike” Boyd, Merle Meyers, Shirley Kvale, Thelma Pals and Ardis Quant; two cousins, who were raised in the same home as Hank, Henry and Betty Gerdis; and at least 107 nieces and nephews and their children.
Local relatives include a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Pat and Harry Winchester and their children, Cathy (Chris) Dresen, Denise (Pat) Gagermeier, Chris (Brian) Shepardson and Marty (Mary) Winchester. In addition to his parents, Hank was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Helen Meyer, Ruth Steinblock, Amy Just, Lawrence “Coke” Meyers, Harm “Bud” Meyers and Allen Meyers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon today at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 515 N. Main St., in Holmen. The Revs. Robert Schaller and Delbert Malin will concelebrate the Mass. Burial, with full military honors, will be in Greenmound Cemetery, rural Holmen. Friends may call at the church today from 10:30 a.m.until the services.

Marvin ‘Mickey’ Lester Hayes
Marvin “Mickey” Lester Hayes, 90, of La Crosse passed away Monday, May 11, 2009, at Hillview Health Care Center in La Crosse.
He graduated from La Crosse Central High School in 1936 and soon after entered the meat-cutting trade.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a Navy Seabee from 1943 to 1945.
He was born to Henry and Fanny Hayes on July 8, 1918, one of 10 children.
Mickey married Kathryn Vidani on July 8, 1940, and enjoyed 67 years of marriage before she preceded him on death Jan. 7, 2008. Mickey and Kathryn has three children, seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was a loving husband, a super dad and a caring grandfather and great-grandfather and will be greatly missed by all.
Mickey was a retired meat-cutter from Bob’s IGA and Monge’s IGA stores. He had 25 years in La Crescent stores — “the cookie man.” He was also a longtime member of the La Crescent American Legion.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Church and the mens club. He especially enjoyed his participation at all the chickencues.
Survivors include sons, Michael (Gail) Hayes of Muncy, Penn., and Joseph Hayes of Fayetteville, Ark., daughter, Susan (Timothy) Wyant of Onalaska; and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Hayes of Euless, Texas. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Chad (Angie) Hayes, Christy (Russ) Wilson, Chandra (Jason) Buckner, Kristine Buxrude, John (Alison) Wyant, Greg (Kerry) Hayes and Gretchen Hayes. He has two stepgreat-grandchildren, David and Adam Schwartz; and great-grandchildren, Brandon, Breanna and Bennett Buxrude, Brianna and Caden Buckner, Tyler and Lauren Hayes, Conner, Hayley and Luke Wilson and Thomas, Daniel and Adeline Wyant; and, of course, many nephews and nieces.
In addition to his wife, Kathryn, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ray, Lee, Lonnie, Jerry and Jack; and his sisters, Opal, Ermal, Lucille and May.
Mickey especially enjoyed his golfing and bowling. He bowled for Festival Foods with his nephew, Jerry Grossbach, and close friends, Ed Schumacher, Don Bott and Glen Jones.
Mickey’s knowledge of baseball was exceptional. He was one of few individuals who could watch a baseball game on TV, listen to another game on the radio and read the sports page in the newspaper, all at the same time.
A special thank you to Gerald (Elaine) Grossbach, Kathleen (Gerald) McConnell, Cari (Matt) Servais and Elizabeth Von for their special attention, love and care, and just visiting with Mickey and Kathryn in their last years.
The family would like to thank the staff at Hillview Health Care for their excellent care, compassion and kindness shown to Mickey.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at noon Thursday, May 14, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in La Crosse. The Rev. Lawrence B. Berger will officiate. Burial and military tribute will follow at the Catholic Cemetery and Mausoleum in La Crosse. Friends may call at the church from 11 a.m to time of services. A luncheon will follow at Leo Hall.
