The “dogs” being mushed in this case were eighth-graders as a half dozen teams vied to be first across the finish line. The contest was the culmination of six weeks of study and, like the real Alaskan Iditarod, was run in sections.

First across the line was the Punners ‘r’ Us team, beating the Macaroni Penguins and others.
The race course, which meandered around the athletic fields and through some adjoining woods — where several “moose” lurked — took more than a half hour and thoroughly exhausted all the participants.
