Onalaska-Holmen-Aquinas sophomore swimmer Brooke Reynolds set the stage for possible top-10 Division 1 state finishes over the next two years at Saturday’s state meet in Madison.
Reynolds took 19th overall in 1 minute, 1.7 seconds in the 100-yard backstroke, but was ninth among sophomores and freshmen. Reynolds took 23rd overall in 1:01.31 in the 100 butterfly, but was seventh among sophomores and freshmen.
“Brooke swam very well at state,” OHA coach Heather Harris said. “Her times were not quite as fast, but she was out very quickly in both events, and her turns looked better. She had a great first experience at state, but it will be nice to have her go down with some other teammates next year.”
Harris entered state hoping Reynolds would be able to chop at least one-third of a second off her sectional time of 1:01.34 in the backstroke, with getting out fast in the first 25 yards a key to doing that. Reynolds completed the first half of her race in 28.28 seconds. Reynolds entered as the 21st seed based on sectional times in both events.
OHA loses Ashlee Gordon, Alicia and Natalie Jorde, Kristi Kamprud, Taylor Mathy, Amanda Puent, Michelle Sawaya, Kaija Sysimaki and Whitlee Tronstad to graduation. In addition to Reynolds, swimmers eligible to return to next year’s team include Bianca Berger, Stephanie Bowman, Kaitlin Bruden, Rachel Caron, Jayde Dale, Gabby Enos, Kristen Glomstad, Sarah Helgeson, Allison Jensen, Molly Kachel, Emma and Moira Killoran, Emilie Klos, Sarah Laylan, Anna Linzmeyer, Emma Lofald, Abbey Lowenstein, Katelyn Mittan, Charis Mortenson, Mary O’ Driscoll, Erin Olson, Kim Pulvermacher, Megan Sisson and Ashley Young.
“This season went very well for us,” Harris said. “The girls worked harder than they ever had before and it paid off for them by swimming best times at the end of the season.
“We will continue to train next year close to the same way, making small adjustmentsas needed. The seniors had a great year, swam very well and were great leaders for our younger swimmers.”
