People who want to try their hand at throwing clay pottery bowls and help support a good cause might want to check out Saturday’s ninth annual Empty Bowls Bowl-a-thon at Holmen High School.
Empty Bowls is an international fundraiser in which funds raised through the selling of ceramic bowls and soup goes to worthy community causes. This year, said longtime organizer Liz Schank, proceeds will go to the TLC Center in Holmen, which offers free necessities and other items for people in need, from food and clothing to tools and toys.
The bowl-a-thon is the first step in the Empty Bowls process. After the bowls are created — both at the bowl-a-thon and after school by HHS Art Club members — the bowls are glazed and fired.
All the bowls created will be on display and for sale at the Empty Bowls soup supper fundraiser, which will be held Dec. 18 at the high school, with the high school’s FFA chapter joining forces with the art club to serve up the supper.
The throwing event on Saturday (from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) is open to anyone interested, and helpful instruction will be available for people who have never thrown pottery before.
People who want to join in Saturday’s bowl-a-thon should call 526-3372, ext. 6504, to set up a throwing appointment.
