EDITORIAL: In praise of generosity, collaboration, service
.
THUMBS UP to Merlin and Carol Huber of Onalaska. The Hubers recently donated a building to Western Technical College in the North La Crosse Industrial Park that allowed WTC to expand its automotive and diesel training programs. It’s this sort of private-public partnership and generosity that benefits not only the students but everyone in the community.
THUMBS UP to Centering Onalaska, for its continued support for revitalizing downtown Onalaska. The volunteer civic group recently purchased new street banners featuring the design of Angel Thao, an Onalaska High School sophomore. The group also coordinates flower baskets and decorates Main Street for Christmas. It just shows that the spirit of community does not always have to come from City Hall.
THUMBS UP to To the idea that La Crosse County and the Holmen School District would collaborate to have the district prepare meals for senior citizen meal sites. We need more intergovernmental collaboration in this era of tight budgets.
THUMBS DOWN to the purveyors of fraud who attempt to prey upon local residents with scams. Perhaps because of a recent story about scams in this paper, an elderly Holmen woman who was contacted by a scammer did not fall for it and called police.
THUMBS UP to longtime Onalaska School Board members Kirby Lentz and Kathleen Kennedy, who said they will not seek re-election. Lentz and Kennedy have devoted a total of 34 years serving the district and deserve thanks.
THUMBS UP to Onalaska-Holmen-Aquinas swimmer Brooke Reynolds who became the first swimmer in the four-year history of the program to qualify for Division 1 state meet. Reynolds finished 19th in the 100-yard backstroke and 23rd in the 100 butterfly.
